Nolan Richard Bogaard, 76, of Coralville , Iowa, passed away Dec. 9, 2022, at Grand Living Assisted Living Facility after many years of health issues.
Nolan was born in Orange City, Iowa, to Cliff and Ethel (DeGraaf) Bogaard on Dec. 23, 1945. He graduated from Maurice-Orange City High School in 1964. He then went on to Northwestern College in Orange City and earned a bachelor’s degree in math and business while also playing football and baseball for the Raiders. At Northwestern, he met and was united in marriage to Mary Lynn Sikkema on April 29, 1967, in Fulton, Ill. They had two daughters Melissa Joy and Monica Hope.
His first job was teaching math and business at Boyden-Hull High School while also coaching football and golf. Nolan then moved to Sioux Center, Iowa, where he joined his father as the business manager at Tri-State Livestock Company. He then got into the building industry. For the next 31 years, he was the building inspector for the cities of Sioux Center, Iowa City, Rockford, Ill., and Coralville, where he retired in 2012.
He was very active in the churches he attended and his faith was very important to him. He served as a deacon and a choir member for many years. Nolan was an avid fan of Iowa Hawkeyes sports, loved to spend time on his landscaping and woodworking and adored watching his grandchildren‘s activities. He rode on several RAGBRAIs and ran many miles in his lifetime.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lynn of Coralville, Iowa; two daughters, Melissa (Mike) Millsap of Onslow, Iowa, and Monica Bogaard of Iowa City, Iowa; and four grandchildren, Miles and Morgan Millsap, and Coy and Karsyn Ruess. He is also survived by his two sisters, Karen (Jerry) Keithley of Humboldt, Iowa, and Mary (Alan) Hofland of Holland, Mich.; five Sikkema brothers and sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
Honoring his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial gathering for friends and family will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Rd., Coralville, Iowa, with a service of remembrance to begin at 4 p.m. Following the service, everyone is invited to stay for a lunch.
