Nina Jean Schroeder Mayer, 90, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha surrounded by her loving family after an extended illness. A memorial service will be held at
2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories. A visitation will commence at
1 p.m. Wednesday, preceding the service.
Survivors include son, Gary (Monica) Schroeder of Cedar Rapids; son, Terry (Deena) Schroeder of Yorkville, Ill.; daughter, Vickie (Steve) Kriz of Mount Vernon; stepson, Robert (Cindy) Mayer Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Lillie Martens; spouse, Palmer Schroeder; spouse, Robert Mayer; spouse, Loren McAllister; daughter, Kristy Kroyman; and great-grandson, Scottie Reif.
Nina Jean Martens was born Dec. 26, 1926, in a farmhouse near Postville, Iowa. She played basketball and graduated from Ossian High School. Palmer Schroeder and Nina Martens were united in marriage on Oct. 10, 1946, in Postville. They made their home in Cedar Rapids with their four children. After Palmer's passing, Nina Schroeder and Robert Mayer found each other. They were married May 26, 1973, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. During her working life, Nina made friends as a lunch lady at Harrison Elementary, later as a receptionist at the Cedar Rapids Water Department and finally enjoying her next job at a medical practice with Dr. McQuiston. She enjoyed crocheting, traveling, flowers and family picnics. As a snowbird, she enjoyed spending several winters over the years in Arizona. Nina was a social bright light and was known throughout the years for her positive attitude and sense of humor.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Hospice House of Mercy and Meadowview for their loving care.
