Niffenegger, William 'Bill'
William “Bill” Niffenegger, 92, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Hiawatha Care Center, Hiawatha. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with military honors. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his children, Dorothy Hora of Tipton, Rita (David) Smith of Atkins, Leo (Karen) Niffenegger of Marion and Nancy (Thomas) Detweiler of Hiawatha; daughter-in-law, Kim Niffenegger of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Wallace Smith of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlyce; son, Guy Niffenegger; and four sisters, Annie Gintert, Irene Wilkinson, Margaret Kemp and Faith Trenary.
Bill was born Sept. 9, 1918, the son of Reuben and Elizabeth (Teeter) Niffenegger, in Center Point, Iowa. A graduate from Center Point High School, he worked at the Beverly Stockyards as a cowboy. Bill served his country during World War II with the United States Army. On Dec. 5, 1945, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Arlyce Smith in Cedar Rapids. He worked as an auto body repairman in Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1982 from Bob Zimmerman Ford Dealership.
Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing bingo and gambling.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Bill.
