Nicholas R. Kremer, 92, of 3106 Schemmel Rd., Cascade, died at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Bethany Home in Dubuque. Friends and relatives of Nicholas may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 2, at Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, where a wake service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Services for Nicholas will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monticello, with full military honors afforded by the Iowa Army National Guard Honor Guard.
Nicholas was born June 10, 1921, in Cascade, Iowa, son of Henry W. and Callista (Schaffer) Kremer. He received his education in Cascade area schools. On May 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to Iona H. Harms at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello. He farmed in the rural Cascade area and also did carpentry work for John Kremer construction.
He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Army Airborne Infantry as a paratrooper and in the European theater. He often stated, "I jumped into France and walked all the way to Berlin." Nicholas was the recipient of the Purple Heart award.
Nicholas was a hell of a man, he had a great enthusiasm for hot air balloon rides and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade.
He is survived by five sons, Edwynn Kremer, Stephen (Donita) Kremer, Andrew (JoAnne) Kremer and Robert Kremer, all of Monticello, and David Kremer of Cascade; 10 grandchildren, Jesse, Stacy, Donnie, Jamie, Marsha, Kelly, Karey, Kristy, Nicholas and Ryan; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lavonne Pasker of Monticello; and a brother, Henry (Jackie) Kremer of Cascade.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Iona H. Kremer, on Aug. 8, 1996; three sisters, Margaret Mausser, Carolyn Rose Schemmel and Isabelle Esther Schemmel; and two brothers, James and John H. "Jack" Kremer.
