Newport, Leonard Karl
CEDAR RAPIDS - Leonard Karl Newport, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at West Ridge Care Center after an extended illness. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, by the Rev. Tom McDermott. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, with military services by American Legion Pekomy Post. Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Teahen Funeral Home, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Karl is survived by his wife, Dolores; his children, Judy (Gary) Huxford of Marengo, Gail Gerber of Vinton, Dave (Connie) Newport of Grinnell, Tom (Joyce) Pochobradsky of Cedar Rapids, Vickie (Mike) Langton of Racine, Wis., Debbie (Dale) Eickstaedt of Cedar Rapids and Ed Pochobradsky of Cedar Rapids; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Jeanne Newport of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren, Kyle, Derek, Josh, Megan, Nick, Samantha, Micheala, K.C., Tami, Shawn, Adam, Mandy and Laura; seven great-grandchildren; and in-laws, Gail (Duane) Gunderson of Cedar Rapids and Dwayne Ellwood of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty; two brothers, Dale and Gerald; and a son-in-law, Doug Gerber.
Karl was born the son of Leonard and Edith (Reichwein) Newport on July 1, 1922, in Cedar Rapids, and married Betty Hasek on Aug. 5, 1943. She died in 1976. He married Dolores Shedek Pochobradsky on June 24, 1978. Karl was a former co-owner, along with his father and brothers, of the family floral business, Newport's Flowers. He was an active member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church, the Fairfax American Legion Pekomy Post, Boy Scouts of America Troop 29, and was formerly with the Model A Club and the Antique Car Club.
Karl will be remembered for his active involvement at church, with the Boy Scouts, and the American Legion. He loved to get away by going fishing or boating and always enjoyed any opportunity to travel or tinker with antique cars.
