Newland, Rodney A.
Rodney A. Newland, 87, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Troy Mills, died Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 23, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, by the Rev. Del Bear. Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial: Troy Mills Cemetery, Troy Mills. Military honors: Troy Mills Legion.
He is survived by three children, Scott E. (Tricia) Newland, Christine Nordstrom and Michael “Bob” (Stephanie) Willits; a son-in-law, Dave Olson; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley Rarick.
Rodney was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou; his parents; daughters, Gayle and Kathy; son, Marc; son-in-law, Steve; and a brother, Robert.
Rodney was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Troy Mills, the son of Art and Eva (Smith) Miller. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1941 and attended the University of Iowa. On Aug. 8, 1973, Rodney was united in marriage to the love of his life, Betty Lou May. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Rodney was an avid ballroom dancer. He loved playing poker, music, watching stock car races and teaching guitar.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Luke's Hospice, 209 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE, Cedar Rapids IA 52402 in Rodney's memory.
