Neuzil, Paul T.
Paul T. Neuzil, 82, of Iowa City, longtime Johnson County farmer and horseman, died peacefully at home Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, following a long battle with cancer. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hills, with the Rev. Louis Leonhardt officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City.
Paul was born May 21, 1927, in Iowa City, the son of Thomas and Irene Vitosh Neuzil. He was raised near Tiffin where he attended school and later attended agricultural school in West Branch. Paul served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On Aug. 1,1953, Paul married JoAnne Cox at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. Paul farmed near Riverside and Hills for most of his life. He loved working the land and raising cattle and horses.
Paul was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Oxford American Legion, Iowa
Draft Horse Association, Plowman's Association and Percheron Horse Association. In 2008, Paul won first place in the antique draft horse competition at the Iowa State Fair.
Paul is survived by his wife, JoAnne; and their nine children, Harold Neuzil of Oxford and his children, Harold “Bo” (Roly) Neuzil Jr. and Sarah Neuzil; Carl (Darci) Neuzil of Dallas, Texas and their children, Nicole, Carley, Kelsey and Keaton; James Neuzil (Judy Kilpatrick) of Mechanicsville and his children, Melanie Walsh, Sherry Craver, Jeremy (Allison) Neuzil, Josie and Dillon (Pam) Neuzil; Catherine (Dennis) Hurley of Iowa City and their children, Shea (Christopher) Eliasen and Neil (Amy) Hurley; Christopher John Neuzil of Iowa City and his children, Jacob, Justin and Elley; Paula (Gary) Piper of Iowa City and their children, Erin and Jennifer (Jason) Renk; Amie (William) Rockafellow of Iowa City and their children, Myrissa (Jeff) Gingerich, Weston (Jessica) Rockafellow and Myleena (Brock) Grenis; Edward (Susanne) Neuzil of Riverside and their daughter, Sydney; and Leo Anthony “Tony” Neuzil of Iowa City and his daughter, Paige; 16 great-grandchildren; his sister, Delores (Frank) Denner of Fort Madison; sister and brother-in-law, Dee Neuzil of Muskogee, Okla., and Paul Langenberg of Oxford; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Mary Jo; and two siblings, Thomas Neuzil and Ann Langenberg.
