Nervig, Agnes S.
Agnes S. Nervig, 92, of Grinnell, formerly of Brooklyn, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 30, 2011, surrounded by her loving family, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 3, First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, with the Rev. John Reynolds Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery, Brooklyn, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kloster Funeral Home, 605 Jackson St., Brooklyn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, or to the Citizen's Scholarship Foundation of BGM High School (CSF of BGM).
Agnes is survived by two children, Jim (Nancy) Nervig of West Des Moines, and Carolyn (Stanley) Duncalf of Waverly; and four grandchildren, Michael Nervig of West Des Moines, Amanda Nervig of San Francisco, Calif., Lynelle (Shannon) Fisher of Ottumwa, and Michelle Duncalf of Ankeny.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Maria Wild Williams; her husband, Irvin in 1986; and her sister, Evelyn.
Agnes was born Jan. 26, 1919, at a family farm northwest of Brooklyn. She graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1937 and from American Institute of Business in Des Moines in 1940. After graduation, Agnes worked at the Farm Bureau office in Brooklyn. On May 11, 1940, Agnes married Irvin L. Nervig, who served as the manager of the T.I.P. Rural Electric Cooperative in Brooklyn, until his retirement in 1978. In the Second World War, Irvin served with the 70th Infantry Division in Italy, France and Germany. During Irvin's time in basic training in the Army, Agnes worked in the Horticulture Department at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore., and later in the School for Mines at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. When Irvin returned from military service in the fall of 1945, Agnes and Irvin returned to Brooklyn and remained married for 46 years until Irvin's death on Feb. 14, 1986.
