Nemer, Maxine Virginia
Maxine Virginia Nemer, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at her home. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, located at 3650 Cottage Grove Ave. SE, with Father Fred Shaheen presiding. Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, where there will be a 7 p.m. Trisagion. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Maxine was born May 21, 1922, in Walker, the daughter of Charles A. and Lillian (Alberts) Kacere. She graduated from McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids. In her early years, she worked alongside her father at Kacere's Food Market, while her brothers served in World War II. Maxine married Nicolas T. Nemer on Aug. 28, 1955, at St. George Church. Maxine and Nicolas owned and operated Nemer's Third Avenue Coffee Bar.
She was an avid Hawkeye and Cubs fan. Maxine enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandson, Benjamin. She was a lifelong member of St. George Church and the Ladies Auxiliary.
Maxine is survived by her daughters, Jean (Walter) Maher and Jane Nemer, and grandson, Benjamin (Sarah) Maher, all of Cedar Rapids; sisters-in-law, Mary Jean Kacere of West Des Moines and Elizabeth Kacere of Cedar Rapids; and her numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nicolas; her brothers, Abe, George, Robert and John Kacere; and sisters, Delia Laham, Fannie Haddy and Helen Wehby.
Memorials may be directed to either St. George Cemetery Fund or Hospice of Mercy in her name.
