Nellie Martinas Saunders, 77, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Nellie was born on January 22, 1947, in Delft, Holland, the daughter of Louis and Levina (DeHamer) Houtzager. She was united in marriage to Tom Saunders on July 30, 1994.
Nellie enjoyed spending the summer at her lake home in Minnesota for the past 25 years. She loved spending her winters in Scottsdale, Arizona, with her friends and family. Nellie loved to watch the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings, playing cards with her friends and family, and spending time with her family.
Nellie is survived by her husband, Tom, children, Dave (Toni) Hunter, and Misty Bruner; grandchildren, Emily (Justin) Stonebraker, Ryan (Rikki) Burns, Alex (Courtney) Hunter, Macen Ginther, Jasmine Hansen, Jacoby Hess, and Seth Bruner; eight great-grandchildren, with one on the way; sisters Louise (Bill) Bruce and Wilma Busenbark; and dog Emma.
Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law, Mark Bruner; and brothers-in-law, Thomas Busenbark, and Donald Fiebelkorn.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in Nellie's honor.
