Neil W. Ayer, 68, of Iowa City, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at his home under hospice care. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Iowa City Church of the Nazarene with a time of visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Neil Wayne Ayer was born May 20, 1947, in Espanola, N.M., the son of Maurice and Leota (Scheier) Ayer. He grew up in Oklahoma and after high school joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he would become a "lifer," retiring at the rank of master sergeant in 1989. During his military career, he lived in Vista, Calif., and served in the Vietnam War. After retirement, he would work another 16 years at the local Home Depot in Vista, Calif. On Oct. 29, 1994, Neil married Teresa Shimon in Vista, where they would reside until 2004 when they moved to Iowa City.
His family includes his wife, Teresa; son, Jason Ayer of Guymon, Okla.; brother, Paul Ayer of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Mary Couger of Frederick, Okla.; and three grandchildren, Zachary and Kylene Ayer and Rockland Norton.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents and son, Gerard Ayer.
