Nebraska, Donald Robert
Donald Robert Nebraska, 85, of 6501 Mosswood Lane NE, Cedar Rapids, died peacefully with his family at his side on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital after an extended illness. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Entombment with military rites at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. today and 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; five children, Dennis Ray (Corinne) Nebraska of Marion, Dwight Robert (Shawnee) Nebraska of Cedar Rapids, Roberta Dawn Caris (Robert) of Iowa City, Darrin Richard (Sherri) Nebraska of Robins and Daryl Richard (Christina) Nebraska of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Patricia Lowman of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Betty Nebraska of Lemont Furnace, Pa.; brothers-in-law, Edward Ray (Arlene) Shoemaker of Dunbar, Pa., Joshua (Evelyn) Shoemaker of Connellsville, Pa., Melvin Shoemaker of Davidsonville, Md., Carol Lambie of Dunbar, Pa., and Gary (Janet) Shoemaker of Dunbar, Pa.
He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Douglas (Candace) Nebraska, Christopher Nebraska, Jennifer (David) Tiede, Adam and Jordan Nebraska, Caitlin and Lauren Caris, Nathan and Shane Nebraska, and Joshua, Jeremy, Jonathan and Joseph Nebraska; and four great-grandchildren, Dylan, Gage, Lexis and Vinnie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Stella Socosky Nebraska; brothers, Thomas and James; a sister, Delores Nebraska; a brother-in-law, Mark Lambie; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Shoemaker.
Donald was born on July 26, 1925, in Dunbar, Pa., to Joseph and Stella Socosky Nebraska. He married Alice Mae Shoemaker on Nov. 27, 1954, in Dunbar, Pa. He was employed at Anchor Hocking Glass Co. for 39 years in South Connellsville, Pa., as a glass bottle operator. He was a World War II veteran in both the European and Pacific wars. He was a member of the 86th Blackhawk Division.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Zenk, Amy, Marcie and staff at the IBCC, Dr. Lee and his staff at Mercy Hospital, and Jeremy and the staff on the fourth and fifth floors at St. Luke's Hospital for their care, support and kindness.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Donald's honor.
