Neal W. Augustine, 88, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 29, 2023.
Neal was born June 21, 1935, in Washington, IA, the son of Lloyd and Evelyn (Crawford) Augustine. He spent his childhood growing up and working on the family farm where he grew to love horses and dogs. After high school he entered the U.S. Army in 1955 and was discharged in 1957. He attended and graduated from Coe College and the University of Iowa, with degrees in business and engineering. On November 20, 1959, he married Mary Spears in Wellman, IA. He worked as an electrical engineer for Square D in Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1998 after 38 years of service. During the time he worked at Square D he also operated the family farm in Ainsworth, IA. After retirement he enjoyed going to casinos, woodworking in his garage, helping his children with home remodeling projects, attending his grandchildren’s many events, doing crossword puzzles, playing solitaire and putting puzzles together.
Survivors include his children Julie (Randy) Thomas of Center Point and Jeff (Tammy) Augustine of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Ashley (Jake) Fangmann of Walker, Megan (Bryon) Bradley of Cedar Rapids, Taylor (Deven) Smith of Davenport and Jacob Augustine of Cedar Rapids; great-grandchildren, Harper and Bennett Bradley; Sawyer, Parker and Thomas Smith; Caden and Hayes Fangmann.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary in 2002, and a brother, Gary Augustine.
A funeral service with military honors will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, January 4, 2024, at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories where visitation will start after 9:30 am. Chaplain Deb Black will officiate. Entombment will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to either Critter Crusaders or Last Hope Animal Rescue of Cedar Rapids, or any other animal rescue shelter of the donor’s choice.
