Naughton, Richard J.
Richard J. Naughton, of San Diego, Calif., passed away at his home on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011. Dick was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Oct. 5, 1946, to Roland and Laurine Naughton and attended Immaculate Conception and graduated Regis High School. In 1964, he headed east to attend the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., a move which marked the beginning of a distinguished 40 year naval career.
Dick was a devoted catholic, avid golfer and never missed an opportunity to hit the links. He enjoyed the challenge even more when the outcome rested on a bit of a wager.
Dick is survived by his wife, Jackie; their son, Sean and his wife, Amanda; his sister, JoAnn Scanlan and her husband, Jack Scanlan; his brother, Bob and his wife, Peggy; his sister-in-law, Kay; his sister-in-law, Jeri Reutter; his faithful companion, golden retriever, Max; and many wonderful friends and family.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his brother, Jim and his sister, Joyce.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 4, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 11451 Blue Cypress Dr., San Diego. Burial will be at The Naval Academy, at a date to be determined. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at El Camino Memorial Chapel, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd., San Diego.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the UCSD Pulmonary Transplant Program. Specifically, the family requests donations be allocated to Dr. Gordon Yung who provided Dick with a second chance at life over the last nine months. The specific details on how to make a donation are listed below.
