Nathan Alan Means, 41, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at the Mercy Hospice House after an extended battle with brain cancer. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, with Deacon Gary Patelski presiding. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 29, at Brosh Chapel.
Nathan was born on June 27, 1973, in Cedar Rapids to father Carl and mother Janice (James) Means. He grew up in a loving family with two sisters, Mary and Alice; and one brother, Curtis. Nathan found his love and married Carrie Patelski in December 2009.
Nathan attended Wilson Junior High and Jefferson High schools. He played football and wrestled, going to the state tournament. Nathan studied civil engineering at Iowa State, later transferring to the University of Iowa, where he completed his B.S. in 1996. He worked toward his master's degree in environmental engineering at the University of Iowa.
Nathan worked for the City of Cedar Rapids Water Department. He worked tirelessly during the 2008 flood for the City of Cedar Rapids. He earned his professional engineering licensure in 2009.
Nathan was passionate about life, the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye football. Nathan loved to travel and take vacations. He made an amazing chili. He enjoyed working out at the gym, Aspen. Throughout everything, he loved, cared for and protected his family and friends.
Nathan was preceded in death by his father, Carl Means. Nathan is survived by his wife, Carrie; his mother, Janice of Cedar Rapids; his two sisters, Mary Means (Matthew Marth) of Vienna, Austria, and Alice (Chris) Kitterman of Cedar Rapids; his brother, Curtis Means of Seattle, Wash.; six nephews; and two nieces.
Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation. As a young man, Nathan frequently donated blood and platelets. As a tribute to Nathan, please consider donating to your local blood bank in his honor.
