Nancy Ann (Challberg) Calkins, 74, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Ed and Joan Hemphill Hospice Unit, after a lengthy battle with cancer. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, July 17 from 4-7pm at Theatre Cedar Rapids in the Linge Lounge, 102 3rd St. SE Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Nancy was born on October 21, 1949, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Vincent J. and Harriet M. (Martens) Challberg. She was a 1967 graduate of Davenport Assumption High School. She later attended Kirkwood Community College in the Medical Assistant Program. On August 23, 1969, Nancy was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Gary Calkins, in Davenport. She worked as a medical assistant for Foot & Ankle Specialists of Iowa until her retirement in 2015.
Nancy enjoyed traveling and watching Iowa Hawkeye sports. She found great joy in a variety of music and loved Saturday nights listening to the Oldies with her husband. She loved spending time with her family, especially attending her grandsons’ sporting events and school functions. Nancy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Nancy is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of 54 years, Gary of Marion; three daughters, Jennifer (Jeremy) Johnson of Marion, Kelly Calkins of Marion; and Shay Owings of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Parker Johnson, Elijah Johnson, Griffin Owings, and Maverick Owings; sister, Laura Challberg of Davenport; along with several nieces, a nephew, and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; mother and father-in-law, George and Harriett Calkins; and several other loved ones.
The family would like to extend a thank you to Dr. Bender, his nurse Deb, the Staff at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and the amazing nurses at UnityPoint Hospital and DaVita Dialysis.
