Nadermann, Kenneth 'Ken' James
Kenneth “Ken” James Nadermann, 41, of Cedar Rapids, died at St. Luke's Hospital, Saturday, May 8, 2010. Memorial mass with military honors: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. A visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel and after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Survivors include his parents, Gerald and Janet Nadermann of New Vienna; sisters, Kim (Wayne) Kerian of Cresco and Sara (Derek) Johnson of Minneapolis; grandmother, Rita Deutmeyer of Dyersville; nieces and nephews, Kirstin, Elyse and Alex Kerian, and Graham Johnson; and many aunts and uncles.
Ken was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ray Deutmeyer and Mike and Alma Nadermann; and uncles, LeRoy and Eldon Nadermann.
Ken was born July 18, 1968, in Dubuque to Gerald and Janet Deutmeyer Nadermann. He was a 1990 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated with military, academic and leadership distinction and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the United States Combat Engineers. Ken received a degree in Systems Engineering. Following graduation and commissioning, Ken attended the Engineer Officer Basic Course at Fort Leonardwood, Mo., and was assigned to the 555th Combat Engineering Brigade at Fort Lewis, Wash. Ken served with great distinction as a Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer and as a Battalion Adjutant. He received numerous military awards and accolades for his selfless service to the Army and soldiers. He was a combat veteran, having served his nation in the First Gulf War, with duty in Desert Shield, Desert Storm and in post war reconstruction efforts – helping to rebuild the infrastructure. Ken retired as a captain with full military honors and benefits.
After leaving the military, Ken was employed by Parsons Corporation and then at Ament Inc.
Ken enjoyed reading historical fiction, crossword puzzles and watching sports; especially the St. Louis Cardinals.
Ken was a role model and inspiration to all. He left a lasting and positive legacy on generations of friends, family and officers. He will be long remembered for his professional excellence, high but fair standards, personal integrity and steady pursuit of always “doing the right thing” no matter how tough. Ken was a generous and caring friend to all that had the honor of knowing him.
The family would like to thank the Iowa City VA Hospital, Ken's private caregivers, and everyone for their support.
