Nadean was born Aug. 16, 1926, in Adair County, Iowa, to Jesse "Lee" and Velma (Stradley) Downing. As a child Nadean loved milking cows, riding horses and working in the fields on her parents' Orient, Iowa, farm. After working in Des Moines as a young woman, she married Lester Humphrey in 1947. They farmed together in southern Iowa, Hills and the Tipton area while raising seven children. After moving into Tipton, she clerked at Schultz Brothers Dime Store and the Sears Roebuck Catalog store. Later she became owner of the Sears store. She was a founding and active member of Cedar Street Baptist Church in Tipton and enjoyed gardening, sewing and crafting, and decorating her Victorian-era home. She was hospitable, often opened her home to friends and strangers, and had the habit of whistling cheerfully while working or crafting. She also loved to sing in the ladies' church groups. She is survived by her children, Steven, Black River Falls, Wis., Roy, Tipton, Kathleen, Tipton, Paul (Mary), Bettendorf, Lorraine (Alan) Abrahamson, Tipton, Mark (Joanie), West Branch, and Elizabeth Humphrey-Robison, Littleton, Colo.; grandchildren, Ron, Ryan, Rachel, Tyson, Jenna, Hayley, Kristal and Joshua Humphrey, Isaac Abrahamson and Conrad and Gwenyth Robison; eight great-grandchildren; and her brother, Don (Joan) Downing, Fontanelle, Iowa.
