Murphy, 'Vi' Violet (Shadid)
“Vi” Violet (Shadid) Murphy, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, with Father Fred Shaheen presiding. Burial will be in St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, where there will be a 7 p.m. Trisagion service. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Vi was born July 14, 1920, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Raymond F. and Elizabeth (Solomon) Shadid. She married Thomas F. Murphy on Nov. 15, 1943, in Alexandria, Va. Tom died Oct. 11, 1982. Vi proudly joined WAC (Women's Army Corps) and served her country in the United States Army during World War II, after which she attended and graduated from Cedar Rapids Business College. Together, Vi and Tom owned Murphy Employment Service from 1956 to 1991. Vi belonged to the Business and Professional Women's Club, Altrusa, Cedar Rapids Women's Golf Association, USBC, National Bowling Association, and Cedar Rapids Bowling. She was a lifetime member of St. George Orthodox Church. Vi enjoyed golf and bowling and was an active Hawkeye and Cubs fan. In addition, she loved going to Las Vegas!
Vi is survived by her daughter, Chris Murphy of Cedar Rapids; her son, Dennis R. (Kay) Murphy of Bettendorf; grandchildren, Laura (Jeff) Kaufman, Tom (Kate) Murphy, Lisa Murphy, Don (Jennifer) Murphy and Michele Bellamy; great-grandsons, Jack Murphy, Ryan Murphy and Zane Kaufman; great- granddaughters, Rachel Murphy and Whitney Bellamy; and her sister, Mary Shadid of Wichita, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom; a daughter, Teri in 1986; and her brothers, Frank Shadid and George Shadid.
Memorials may be directed to Taylor Elementary School Computer Lab and St. George Orthodox Church.
