Murlen Philip Vogt, 100, of Williamsburg, formerly of Homestead, was called home to the Lord Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg following a short illness. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Marengo, with the Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at the church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be contributed to St. John's Lutheran Church, Marengo, The Lutheran Hour or the charity of the donor's choice.
Murlen is survived by his children, Ronald Vogt (Rosella) of Homestead and Donna Blythe (Daryl) of Williamsburg; a daughter-in-law, Lorraine Vogt of Tiffin; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, Mark Vogt of Homestead, Kerri Vogt of Wheatridge, Colo., Keith Vogt (Sandy) and daughter, Evangeline Vogt, of Cedar Rapids, Becky Esser (Darin) of Cedar Rapids, Christine Fluegel (Jeff) and family, Ashley and Logan Fluegel, of Janesville, Wis., Jon Vogt of Tiffin, Dr. Jeff Blythe (Darcy) and family, Paige Fooshee (Garrett) of Derby, Kan., and Nolan and Clayton Blythe of Orange City; Curt Blythe (Mary) of Williamsburg and family, Trenton Blythe (Molly) of Oak Park, Ill., Holden Blythe (Kelly), Austin Blythe (Kiley Ritchie) and Corbin Blythe of Williamsburg; Matt Blythe (Robin) and family, Garrett and Gage Blythe of Williamsburg; and Stacey Cremeens (Aron) and family, Tyler Cremeens, Dillon Blythe, Cole Cremeens and Carlee Cremeens of Williamsburg; and a brother-in-law, Vernon Sandersfeld (Esther) of Homestead.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gertrude, in 2011; a son, Lowell Vogt in 2002; and a brother, Eldon Vogt.
Murlen Philip Vogt was born March 14, 1914, in Homestead, Iowa, the son of Philip Joeseph Vogt and Katherine Kohler Kuch Vogt. He attended the Homestead schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1932. He was united in marriage to Gertrude Gesina Sanders-feld on Nov. 28, 1940, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Homestead.
Murlen was born, raised and farmed the same land his entire life. This farm is now a designated Century Farm. He also worked for the Homestead Feed Mill and did land measuring for ASC.
Murlen was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Marengo, where he held several offices. He was on the building committee for the education building and the new church. He was a dartball member and a member of the men's club. He also was a member of Farm Bureau.
Murlen was loyal to the Iowa Hawkeyes and was also an avid Cubs fan. He especially enjoyed his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and attending all the family and school activities, even his own recently celebrated 100th Birthday Party.
