Mumby, Orville W.
Orville W. Mumby, 97, of Marengo, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg, Iowa. Private family graveside services will be held. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Orville is survived by his wife of 69 years, Florence of Williamsburg; a son, Larry O. Mumby and wife Mary of Denver; and two grandsons, Adam Mumby of Waterloo, and Chris Mumby of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lloyd and Vernon Mumby; and a sister, Gretchen Kinzenbaw.
Orville Walter Mumby was born Oct. 15, 1913, in rural Ladora, Iowa, the son of Walter and Gertrude Close Mumby. He received his education in the Ladora schools and married Florence Linda Gates on August 3, 1941. He was a lifelong resident of Iowa County and farmed until 1976. He and Florence continued to live at the farm near Ladora where they had resided since March 1949. In 2009, the couple left the farm and moved to Highland Ridge in Williamsburg.
In retirement Orville was busy watching and talking farming with his family and friends. He also spent time entertaining his grandsons on their many trips to stay at the farm.
Orville Mumby was a proud man who lived off the land and worked very hard every day to provide for his family and take care of Florence in the later years of their lives. He was as patient as he was calm. He may have had bad days in life but you would never know that when you spoke with him.
