Mulvehill, Catherine 'Katie' Irene
Catherine “Katie” Irene Mulvehill, 103, of Manchester, died Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester following a brief illness. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester by her grandson, the Rev. Dennis Quint. Family will greet friends from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, where there will be a 2:30 p.m. rosary and a 6 p.m. Scripture service. Additional visitation will be one hour before services Monday at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Masonville.
Katie was born Jan. 25, 1906, in Ryan, the daughter of James and Mary M. (Cashman) O'Neil. In 1925, she graduated from St. John's High School in Ryan. Katie attended Xavier Business School in Manchester studying the commercial course. She clerked at the LV Ware Department Store in Ryan. On Sept. 9, 1930, she was united in marriage to Thomas M. Mulvehill at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ryan. The couple farmed in the Masonville area until retiring to Manchester in 1969. Thomas died June 11, 1980. Katie moved to the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester in April 2006.
Katie was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and needlework. Katie was known for her baking, especially her ginger cream cookies. She was dedicated to her family. Home was Katie's castle, where she enjoyed being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and hearing her great-grandchildren call her “Grandma Katie.” Katie had a lot of company and enjoyed meeting them at the door when they came for a game of cards or a friendly chat. Katie was proud of her Irish ancestry but was glad to be in the USA.
Katie is survived by her four children, Marie (Jim) Broghammer of Manchester, Catherine (Vernon) Quint of Ryan, Donald J. (Betty) Mulvehill of Des Moines and Eileen (Tom) Brunow of Cedar Rapids; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Katie was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary O'Neil; her husband, Thomas Mulvehill; a daughter, Margaret J. “Peggy” Mulvehill; two grandchildren, Jennifer Mulvehill and Thomas Mulvehill; four sisters, Nellie Ryan, Mary McMahon, Margaret O'Neil and Colette McElliott; and an infant brother, John.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary Parish, Manchester, or the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester.
