Muller, Leroy Edward
Leroy Edward Muller, 85, of 1095 Silvercrest Circle and formerly of Abbey Lane in Iowa City, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at Mercy Hospital Hospice Care in Iowa City. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. Father John Spiegel will officiate. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, with the visitation following from 3 to 8 p.m. at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the Leroy E. Muller Memorial Fund.
Leroy was born June 1, 1926, in Riverside, Iowa, the son of Edward and Edna (Roberts) Muller. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Riverside and on Nov. 23, 1948, married LaVera Duffey in Lone Tree. He served with the United States Seabees during World War II in the South Pacific. After his military service, Leroy became a plumber and worked for Riverside Plumbing. He later worked for Boyd & Rummelhart in Iowa City for 20 years. Moving to Iowa City in 1973, he opened and operated Muller Plumbing and Heating, until his retirement in 1992.
Leroy was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Marquette Council No. 842, Riverside VFW Post No. 6414, Iowa City American Legion Post No. 17 and the Iowa City Elk's Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, playing cards and socializing with family and friends.
Survivors include his children, Dianne Nelson (Richard) of Kalona, Joe Muller (Laura) of Austin, Texas, Julie Maas (Bud) of Iowa City, and Donald Muller (Cathy) of Woodland Hills, Calif.; brother and sisters, Rose Marie Rhodes of Davenport, Dorothy Stumpf of Kalona, and Paul Muller (Joanne) of Newton; grandchildren, Amber Capps, Dante Nelson, Stephen Nelson, Michelle King, Alexandria Muller and Jackson Muller; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, LaVera; son, James Muller; three brothers, John, Robert and Kenneth Muller; and a grandson, Bernie Lichtifeld.
