Muhl, Helen Merryman
Helen Merryman Muhl, 90, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Fort Dodge, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital. There will be no services per her request.
Helen was born and grew up in Fort Dodge, where she knew and later married her husband of 70 years, Capt. Fred Muhl. Because of his 35 years of work as an airline pilot for Pan American Airlines, she lived and raised her family of three daughters in the U.S. and all around the world.
To adequately tell you of her many achievements would be long but here are a few. She was an active member of the DAR and an ardent supporter of veterans and veterans' affairs. She loved to entertain and was known for her elaborate dinner parties. While living in Hong Kong during Vietnam she regularly opened her home to soldiers on R and R for an all-American meal and the closeness of family. While living in Kitzbuhel, Austria, she helped arrange tours of organizations she favored. Being a homemaker her work outside the home was mostly volunteering - from the town library, her church, our elementary school to political campaigns. She was tireless. In 1982, after a lifetime of living abroad she and Fred, never forgetting their roots, returned and settled in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
She is survived by her daughters, Marti Muhl of California and Jill S. Kobold, and granddaughter, Cassidy Kobold, both of Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Muhl; and her daughter, Victoria Sansoni.
