Moreland, Keith D.
Keith D. Moreland, 80, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at the Hiawatha Care Center. A funeral Mass celebrating Keith's life will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, with the Rev. Philip Thompson officiating. There will be a visitation one hour before at the church on Monday. Inurnment will be in Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Keith Moreland was born Dec. 29, 1932, in Hollandale, Minn., the son of Clarence and Elzina (Dixon) Moreland. He attended and graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1951. He attended the University of Northern Iowa, receiving a B.A. in 1955, and received a M.A. from the University of Northern Colorado in 1959. When he returned to Cedar Rapids in 1955, he taught for five years at Wright School, and went on to become principal of Buchanan, Tyler, Adams, Garfield, and Van Buren schools. He married Mildred A. “Micki” Sweeney in Britt, Iowa on Nov. 28, 1958.
Keith was a member of Phi Mu Alpha, Phi Delta Kappa, and the State and National Association of Elementary School Principals. He was also a former member of the Cedar Rapids Symphony, the board of Camp Good Health, Jane Boyd Community House, and Catholic Charities.
Survivors include his daughter, Mollie (Don) Bruce of Bloomington, Ill.; son, Christopher Moreland of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Adam (Christina) Bruce of Normal, Ill., Amanda (Kyle) Allison and Emily (Zach) Long, both of Bloomington, Ill; sister, Ilene Downey of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Maisie Moreland; great-grandchildren, Kaci, Mallorie, Aiden, MaKayla, Colton and Kylie; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Hal and Carolyn Garwood and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred Anne “Micki” Moreland in 1986; brothers, Kenneth, Marvin (Beverly), Edwin (Maebelle) and Melvin Moreland; sister, Ruth Moreland; and brother-in-law, Bob Downey.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hiawatha Care Center for the kindness they showed to Keith, who he thought of as family.
