Moore, Greta Lou McGimpsey
Greta Lou McGimpsey Moore, 83, of Thornburg, passed away early Thursday morning, Oct. 17, 2013, at MHP Hospice Services Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
Greta Lou McGimpsey Moore, daughter of Arthur Charles and Lorene Etta (Edmundson) McGimpsey, was born Aug. 18, 1930, in Thornburg, Iowa. She was a lifelong resident of Thornburg and a 1948 graduate of Thornburg High School. She married her high school sweetheart, David “Jim” James Moore, on July 22, 1949, at the Thornburg United Methodist Church. They began farming in 1951 and were partners in that endeavor for their entire married life. Greta Lou cooked many meals for the farm hands they employed through the 50 years they farmed. She also cooked for six years for the Thornburg School hot lunch program.
Greta Lou attended the Thornburg United Methodist Church as a child and joined the church at an early age. Greta Lou was an active member, teaching Sunday school and Bible school and attending United Methodist Women. After the Thornburg church closed in 2012, Greta Lou attended the What Cheer United Methodist Church, where she faithfully attended the Wednesday morning Bible Brunch. Greta Lou also belonged to a Friendship Club - this club met once a month for more that 60 years and she developed deep and lasting friendships through the years at these monthly meetings.
Greta Lou is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jim of Thornburg; her children, David Van (Peggy) Moore of Oskaloosa, Joy Lou Ann (Ron) Denison of Thornburg and James Ace (Meghan) Moore of Somerset, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Joy Dee Xan (Mike) Mooney of Wayne, W.Va., Jace Vance (Courtney) Denison of Olathe, Kan., and Xavier Ignatius Moore, Cora Fallon Moore, Finian Arthyr Moore, Zelda Hyacinth Moore and Lorcan Nollaig Moore, all at home in Somerset, Wis.; and a great-granddaughter, Alexa Lou Mooney.
Greta Lou was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral Services for Greta Lou will be 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, with the Rev. Vince Homan of the What Cheer United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Monday; the family will be present from 9 a.m. to service time to greet visitors.
