Mooney, James A.
James A. Mooney, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, April 15, 2011, following a brief illness. A Celebration of Life service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, where friends may call after noon. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
He was born March 28, 1930, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Leo and Edith (McCann) Mooney. He graduated from Waverly High School, Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and received his master's degree in school administration from the University of Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 in the Korean conflict.
In 1964, he married Winifred Erbe, who passed away in 2001. His entire teaching and administrative career was spent with the Cedar Rapids School District, where he served at Roosevelt and Harding middle schools.
He is a past president of the Cedar Rapids Federation of Teachers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Winnie; his parents; his sister, Dorothy Parsons; his brothers, John and Joe; and three great-grandsons.
He is survived by a sister, Mary Hansen of Cheyenne, Wyo.; three children, Kendra (Bill) Long of Altoona, Keely (Jim) Harken of Grundy Center and Ken (Bonnie) Hach of Alta; 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Jim was a beloved dad, grandpa and great-grandpa and took special delight in his family, his music, reading and the Hawkeyes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
