Monica B. Hoerner, 85, of Zwingle, died Sunday, April 9, 2017, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf surrounded by her family. Visitation was held Tuesday, April 11, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd., Dubuque. Family and friends may also visit from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home until time of Mass. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Otter Creek with the Rev. Richard Ament officiating. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery, Sylvia Switch, rural Zwingle.
Monica was born Jan. 12, 1932, in Zwingle, Iowa, the daughter of John Sr. and Kathyrine (McCarthy) Regan. She was a graduate of Holy Rosary School in La Motte. On Feb. 17, 1953, she was united in marriage to John Carson "J.C." Hoerner at Holy Rosary Church in LaMotte. Monica worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 38 years as a clerk and then as postmaster. She was a member of St. Lawrence Otter Creek Church, the Sylvia Switch Rosary Society and the Zwingle Recreation Association.
Monica loved to dance when given the opportunity. She was a classy lady who loved to wear her hats. She also enjoyed being outside and mowing with her John Deere riding lawn mower. She had a soft spot for all the birds that came to feed on her acreage and fed them so much she thought she should be able to write them off on her taxes! Surprisingly, Monica continued to wash throughout the years with her Maytag ringer washer. She collected used Maytags like Jimmy D. collects classic cars!
Monica is survived by her 10 children, Deb (David) Hanson of Parkview, Jim (LouAnn) Hoerner of Zwingle, John (Cindy) Hoerner of Dubuque, Joe (Pam) Hoerner of Davenport, Jerry (Sheila) Hoerner of Davenport, Jeff Hoerner of Moline, Ill., Lisa (Steve) Hoerner Hanson of Davenport, Jason (Cim) Hoerner of Eldridge, Angie (Shawn) Fluhr of La Motte and Sue (Shane) Veach of Eldridge. Monica had l3 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters-in-law, Natalie (Jack) Regan of Grand Mound, Shirley (Jukes) Regan of Dubuque, Joyce (Fred) Regan of Zwingle and Della (Eldon) Hoerner of Epworth; and a brother-in-law, Gene (Margaret) Stillmunkes of Zwingle.
Monica was preceded in death by her parents, John C. Regan and Kathyrine; her husband, J.C. Hoerner, on Nov. 26, 1991; her father- and mother-in-law, John C. Hoerner and Neva; and her siblings, Rita Regan, Kate (Ray) Kemerer, Amelia (Neil) Bruck, John "Jack" (Mary) Regan, Agnese (Joe) Hayes, Fred Regan, Margaret Stillmunkes, Pauline (Harold) Takes, Julian "Jukes" Regan, James "Worm" Regan, J.C. Ripple, Eldon Hoerner, Paul "'Winkie" (Bernadine) Hoerner and Edith (Bob) Lyons.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Monica Hoerner memorial fund.
The family of Monica would like to thank Dr. Eric S Engelman and his nurse, Sarah, the staff of Clarissa C. Cook Hospice of Bettendorf, Hospice of Dubuque, Lisa Flannigan of By Your Side Care and Rose Veach. Also, thank you to all family and friends who supported us with their prayers.
