Mohsen “Mo” Monsef, 72, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, February 14th, 2025. Per his wishes, there were no services, but if you wish to honor his memory, a donation made in his name to the American Lung Association, would be very much appreciated.
Mohsen was born in Iran on April 9th, 1952, to Shoukrolah and Batool (Salemi) Monsef. He was the youngest, a boy with three older sisters, and he often admitted that as a child, “he could climb the straight walls”. As evidenced by his grandsons, this trait appears to be genetic. He came to the U.S. in the mid-70’s to attend Clarkson University in northern N.Y. where he earned his master’s in mechanical engineering. During this time, he met and married his wife, Cheryl. The birth of his two daughters, Anahita and Soraya, and multiple moves across the country for work at different nuclear plants, filled his life and gave it purpose.
Retirement from DAEC gave him a little more time to enjoy his lifelong hobbies: gardening- he was always happy playing in the dirt with his plants, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, playing cards; and cooking- whether it be grilling kabob or baking some delicious baklava. He had the best sense of humor, and enjoyed fixing things or planning “projects,” but the last several years he really enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandsons. They brought him happiness and gave him many reasons to laugh, and to shake his head in disbelief.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cheryl, two daughters, Anahita Monsef and Soraya Wagner (Keegan) and his two grandsons, Elliot and Edison Wagner. He is also survived by two sisters: Shalah Salemi (Mozafar) and Zoreh Zarnegar as well as 5 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Parvoneh Monsef. He was an intelligent, highly motivated, unique man, who made friends wherever he went and was loved dearly by his family. His absence will be felt profoundly
