Mitchell, Evelyn Jane

Evelyn Jane Mitchell, 92, died Friday, April 20, 2012, at Crestview Care and Rehab Center in West Branch. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, at West Branch United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch. Burial will be in West Branch Cemetery.

Evelyn was born July 17, 1919, in Cedar County, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob Levi and Ethel M. (Burkholder) Thumma. She attended country school and West Branch school. On May 8, 1937, she was united in marriage at West Branch to Elmer Mitchell.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, Home Social Club and Card Club. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing, country music and spending time with her family.

Survivors include two children, Donald (Diane) Mitchell of Maple Grove, Minn., and Beverly (Doug) Hastings of West Branch; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a sister, M. Fern Stubbs of Tipton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Howard, who was killed during World War II; and a sister, Martha Paulsen.
