Miller, Verton S.
Verton S. Miller died Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at Pleasant View Home in Kalona at the age of 87 years. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, rural Kalona. Pastors Don Patterson and Dick Swartzendruber will officiate. Burial will be in Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona, where the family will greet friends from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Verton was born July 2, 1923, near Kalona, Iowa, the son of the Rev. Albert S. and Maggie (Miller) Miller. He attended Sharon Center High School. Verton was united in marriage to Anna Pearl Brenneman on Dec. 7, 1947, at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, rural Kalona. Verton was a lifelong farmer in the Kalona area. He sold Pioneer seed for 30 years. Verton enjoyed working in his apple orchard, at the fish pond, making taffy, gardening and visiting with friends and family. Verton was a member of Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, where he taught Sunday school, Bible school and was a MYF sponsor.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl; three children, Ken (Chris) Miller of Iowa City, Kathy Scheuerman of Denver, Colo., and Donna (Carl) Darby of Iowa City; five grandchildren, Carol, Brian, Tammy, Michael and Vanessa; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Hugo; and a brother, Willis Miller of Kalona.
Verton was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Sharm Scheuerman; four brothers, Joe, Roy, Chester and Albert Jr.; and a sister, Katie.
