Miller, Janice Lynn
Janice Lynn Miller, 73, of Solon, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011. Memorial services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City on Aug. 18 at 2 p.m., with Pastor Mark Kukkonen officiating. Burial will be at South St. Petri Cemetery in Gilbert, Iowa at a later date.
Jan was born Jan. 21, 1938, in Ames, Iowa, the daughter of Eugene and Gerene (Peterson) Eness. She spent her childhood in Gilbert, Iowa, and graduated from Gilbert High School. After graduation, she attended Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing, Des Moines. She was a 1963 graduate of the University of Iowa School of Nursing. She began her career caring for others at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Jan was also a school nurse in the Cedar Rapids School District from 1976-2000. She married the love of her life, Jack, on April 11, 1964. They resided in Cedar Rapids from 1964-1989, and then moved to Lake Macbride, where they have lived since.
Jan was a 25-year volunteer with the American Cancer Society, and she was instrumental in implementing the Reach to Recovery Program in Iowa. She was a member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association. Jan was a charter member of Sons of Norway Restauration Lodge in Cedar Rapids. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City.
Jan leaves behind a void in the hearts of her family. This includes her loving husband, Jack of Solon; her daughters, Paula Miller of Iowa City and Jennifer Levelwind (Dale) of Two Harbors, Minn.; brothers, Paul Eness (Margot) of Dayton, Iowa and David Eness (Debi) of Mountain Home, Ark.; sisters, Linda Flaherty of FortMyers, Fla., and Kirsten Barta (Clifford) of Ames; and grandchildren, Fred and Giullietta Meraz and Henry, Carl and Greta Levelwind. Survivors also include many nieces and nephews who unanimously considered her their favorite aunt.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church or the Shelter House of Iowa City.
