Miller, Dorothy Lydia
Dorothy Lydia Miller, 87, of 1224 13th St. NW (MethWick Manor) went to be with the Lord on Feb. 1, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital, dying of cardiac arrest. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 4, at 10:30 a.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dr. Dean Rothchild will be presiding. Friends may call Friday evening from 5 to 7 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Earl Miller; her daughters and their husbands, Jewell and Michael Morow of Indianapolis and Karen and Dr. John Thornton of Mount Vernon, Iowa; and her son, Thomas Miller and wife Janice, both of Woodinville, Wash. Also surviving are two grandsons, David Miller and Timothy Miller of Woodinville, Wash.; and five granddaughters, Amy Miller Hamilton of Ellicott City, Md., Carrie Miller of Kirkland, Wash., and Molly, Bonnie and Beatrix Thornton of Mount Vernon; one great-grandson, Ian; and one great-granddaughter, Elena of Ellicott City.
She was born Sept. 17, 1924, to Emil and Lydia Voeltz, in Minor County, S.D., along with three brothers and six sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers and sisters.
She attended Cornell College, and served proudly in the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C., during World War II. She married Earl Miller on June 10, 1947, and graduated from Coe College.
She served on the state board of the League of Women Voters, and was a member of PEO chapters IF and GA. She was a charter member of Zion Lutheran Church of Hiawatha. She taught Sunday school and Bible school and was also a member of the Parish Guilds of the LCMS and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and attended Lutheran Church of the Cross in Port Charlotte, Fla. She and Mr. Miller participated in Bible classes at both churches.
Dorothy enjoyed various crafts and she also was an avid doll collector. She was particularly proud of her project in building a large detailed doll house.
She loved her family and was a faithful and diligent worker at home, in the community and to her Lord. She could be depended on to serve in anything she was involved with and she often made soup for friends who were ill.
She will be greatly missed by those who loved her.
