Miller, Bert J.
Bert J. Miller, 89, of Coralville, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at home surrounded by his family. Bert died of complications following a stroke. His family will greet friends, share memories and toast to a life well lived from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at The Kirkwood Room at Governor's Ridge, 515 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City. Bert chose to be cremated. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date at Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Lensing Funeral Service is handling arrangements.
Bert was born June 12, 1921, in Iowa City, the son of Elbert and Emma Spreng Miller. He married Donna Mae Scheetz on July 28, 1946.
Bert was a graduate of Iowa City High School and an avid Little Hawk, Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. His first adult job was in the parts department at the Ford dealership in Iowa City, where he met his future wife. He also managed two automobile service stations and was owner of Miller Brothers Monument Co. His most recent employment was operating the children's carousel at Coral Ridge Mall.
Bert was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the loving staff of the Iowa City Hospice who helped them care for Bert during his final days.
During his life Bert enjoyed fishing, traveling, mushrooming, golfing and spending time with family and friends.
Bert is survived by his wife, Donna Miller; his daughter, Nancy Joy Duffner of Glenview, Ill.; his sons, Bert Jay (Laura) Miller of Mount Pleasant, and Randy Merton (Lora) Miller of Iowa City; his sister, Bernice Boyce of West Des Moines; and five grandchildren, Amber, Megan, Tyler, Anna and Aspen.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Eldon; and four sisters, Edna Guiles, Edith Stoner, Elynore Spacek and Elberta Deutremont.
