Mildred J. "Millie" Dirks, 87, died Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at the Gardens of Cedar Rapids.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 7, at Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone, with Pastor Mike Ferguson officiating. Interment will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Keystone from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. A memorial fund has been established.
Millie was born on Feb. 11, 1931, in Dike, the daughter of Thomas and Caroline (Freese) Johnson. On Sept. 7, 1958, she was united in marriage to William Henry Dirks at First Methodist Church in Cedar Falls. Millie lived her early life in Dike and Cedar Falls, working five years at Piggly Wiggly and five years at Viking Pump in Cedar Falls. The family moved to Cedar Rapids in 1965. She was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. She was a longtime member of the Gladners Circle and spent 10 years in the Olivet Kitchen Band. She also was a member of the Cedar Valley Dulcimer Society.
Millie is survived by her sons, Leon (Kay) Dirks of Cedar Rapids and Neal (Cindy) Dirks of Knoxville; four grandchildren, Casey, Noel, Wyatt and Zachary Dirks; and two sisters-in-law, Berdene (Jim) Biersner and Joanne Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; her son, Clark; her grandson, Jacob; and her brother, Ronald Johnson.
