Mike Schulze, 84, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral services: 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne. Officiant: Pastor Crystal Oberheu. Private interment: Salem Cemetery near Van Horne. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home in Blairstown. Memorials may be directed to the church. Mike was born July 22, 1932, on the family farm near Van Horne. He graduated from Van Horne High School and was united in marriage to Shirley on June 22, 1952, at Blairstown Presbyterian Church. Mike and Shirley celebrated 64 years of marriage together.
Mike was a lifelong farmer in the Van Horne area and was devoted to his cattle and other chores around the farm. He loved to tinker with old farm equipment. Mike was a member of the Keystone Turners and enjoyed bowling league. He liked anything outdoors, especially deer and pheasant hunting. Mike also liked to take his grandchildren fishing in the pond.
In addition to his wife, Mike is survived by six children, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one more on the way, one brother, two sisters and a sister-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, one brother and a grandson.
