Mike McKee, 65, formerly of Cedar Rapids, IA, died of natural causes at his home in Bonita Springs, FL on September 8, 2025.
Mike was born in Cedar Rapids on July 13, 1960 and he was the son of Donald and Patricia McKee. He attended Washington High School, graduating with the Class of 1978. He was on the swim team in high school and also competed on the swim teams for Elmcrest Country Club and the Cedar Rapids Country Club. His other interests were any activities around the water and repairing and modifying cars. When he was 18 he created a dune buggy from a 1966 Volkswagen Beetle. His last project was a rebuild of a 1967 Camaro. He and his sons rebuilt the whole car, top to bottom. In 1983 Mike married his high school sweetheart Karen VanderSanden. They had 3 children, Kristen, Michael, and Christopher. They have since divorced. Mike’s children were his greatest joy. He enjoyed spending time with his kids through the years with their favorite hobbies of camping, four-wheeling, and boating. In1999 he and his partner and close friend Dave Walter founded North Collier Collision in Naples, FL and it has been a successful business for over 26 years.
Mike is survived by his daughter Kristen (Cory) Rutkowski and their sons Jayce and Asher, and sons Michael and Christopher McKee, sister Marsha (Tony) McCall, and brother Mark (Donna) McKee and their children Sarah and Matthew. He was predeceased by his parents Donald and Patricia McKee. A Celebration of Life will be held on September 28 from 2-5 pm at Artichoke & Co., 11920 Saradrienne Lane, Bonita Springs, FL 34135. The family is being assisted with arrangements by Legacy Options Funeral and Cremation Service, 12600 Trade Center Dr., Ste. 1, Bonita Springs.
