Mike Cornwell, 72, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away following a short battle with cancer, Thursday, June 27, 2024, at his home. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2024, at The Legacy Center at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life gathering will immediately follow at Checker’s Tavern, 3120 6th St. SW, Cedar Rapids.
Mike was born October 2, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Russell and Eileen (Crowley) Cornwell. He graduated from LaSalle High School. Mike worked at Black Diamond Limo, McGrath Auto, Zimmerman Auto, Allen’s Auto and Sherwin-Williams. His passion then became the bar/restaurant industry, owning the Free Way Express, Outskirts, and Double Inn. Mike was known for his charismatic and personable nature. He loved fishing, golfing, and playing darts with his friends at his bar/restaurants. Mike will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his children, Katie Cornwell and her children, Aiden and Lakota of Cedar Rapids, Russell (Gretchen) Cornwell and their son, Bennett of Toddville, Michael (Rose) Cornwell and their son Landon of Palo, and Keri (Hayes) Charles and their children, Olwyn and Melanie of Coon Rapids; former wife, Mindy Cornwell of Coon Rapids; siblings, Fred Cornwell of Ankeny, Gary (Claudia) Cornwell of Germantown, Tennessee, and Pat (John) Balk of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Hubcap.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Pat Cornwell.
