MICHAELYN MILLER
Iowa City
Michaelyn B. Miller (McKenzie), 66, passed away on July 24, 2017. She died in the hospice care unit at Mercy Iowa City surrounded by her family. Known as the owner of "Cakes by Michaelyn," she was more frequently and lovingly referenced as "The Cake Lady" throughout Eastern Iowa. She spread joy and love throughout the community with her rainbow cakes and generosity.
Michaelyn was born and raised in Muskegon, Mich., and a graduate of Reeths-Puffer High School (1969). Though she left Michigan when she married her husband of 48 years, she returned to Muskegon often. Michaelyn loved to experience the soft beach sand on her toes, and being pushed over by the waves of Lake Michigan a joy she shared with her daughter for many years.
Michaelyn's cake business started in 1980 and was based in Solon, Iowa. In the beginning it was just a hobby; she made cakes for family and her daughter's classmates. Quickly her hobby grew into a second
full-time job. By 1986, Cakes By Michaelyn was a
well-known family business. Together, Michaelyn, Dale and Kathy made a variety of specialty character cakes that catered to the imagination of the customer. Her rainbow cakes were a joy and wonder to many with their swirl of colors inside.
She will be deeply missed by her family and friends: her husband, Dale Miller of Iowa City, Iowa; her daughter, Katherine Miller, and daughter-in-law, Rachel English of Normandy Park, Wash.; her brother, Mack McKenzie (Sue) of Whitehall, Mich,; and sister, Brenda Cwiakala (David) of Goldsboro, N.C.; as well as many nieces and nephews will hold tightly to their precious and priceless memories.
Per her wishes, Michaelyn will be cremated and there will be no services. Your prayers and expressions of sympathy are deeply appreciated. Kindness extended through financial support to address expenses related to her medical care and burial may be sent to Lensing Funeral Home (605 Kirkwood Ave., Box 167, Iowa City, IA 52244) in care of Michaelyn Miller Memorial or through youcaring.com/mm.
