Michael Eugene Young, 58, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Marion. The family will greet friends and family one hour before the service at the church. A private burial will take place at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion.
Michael was born July 16, 1959, in Fairfax, Mo., the son of Richard and Deloris (Messick) Young. He graduated from high school in Springville, Iowa, in 1977 and went on to attend the University of Iowa. While in college, he marched with the Iowa Hawkeye marching band. Michael worked for Electric Specialties and Whirlpool. He was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals. Michael enjoyed hunting and trap shooting with his dad, uncles and friends. A great vocalist, he loved music, and was a talented trumpet and guitar player.
Michael is survived by his parents; sisters, Lori (Jay) Morgan of Mount Vernon, Iowa, and Julie Young of Maryville, Tenn.; nieces and nephews, Sam, Jake and Cate Morgan, Sara and Seth Bowden; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, three uncles and an aunt.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha or University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
