Michael W. Olney, 82, of Iowa City, passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025 at the Briarwood Health Care Center surrounded by loving family following a courageous battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 10, at 10:00 AM at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City with Reverend John Lamansky officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 PM on Friday, January 9, 2026, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. A rosary will be held prior to the visitation at 4:30 PM. Everyone is invited to return to the church for a luncheon following the burial.
Michael was born on June 25, 1943 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Lucille (Missel) Olney. He graduated from Iowa City Regina High School in 1962. Following graduation Michael enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served active duty as a Fuel Specialist with the 379th Supply Squadron stationed at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, in Oscoda, Michigan. During that time, Michael was deployed to the Philippines and was stationed at Clark Air Base where he served until his release from active duty in November 1966. While stationed in Michigan, Michael met the love of his life, and future wife, Janet Schafer.
Michael and Janet were united in marriage on August 5, 1972, in Essexville, Michigan, and to this union two sons were born, John and Steven. After moving back to Iowa City, Michael was hired by the Iowa City Community School District in 1973 and retired as an HVAC Technician in 2009. Michael was a lifelong member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Michael enjoyed working around his house and liked working on different vehicles he owned throughout the years. Michael enjoyed meeting with his friends for breakfast and conversation, he especially cherished his trips to Michigan to visit family and old friends. Most of all, Michael loved the time he spent with his grandchildren, Logan and Elizabeth. The multiple holidays, trips and adventures Michael spent with his grandchildren will always be remembered.
Michael was a beloved father and grandfather; his sense of humor, love and strength will never be forgotten.
Survivors include his two sons, Steven (Misty) Olney of Manly, Iowa and John (Carrie) Olney of Aurora Illinois; grandchildren: Logan and Elizabeth Olney; siblings Howard (Marlene) Olney of North Liberty, Iowa, Carolyn Olney of Riverside, Iowa, Robert (Carole) Olney of Coralville, Iowa, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Lucille Olney, and sister Bernice Kennedy.
