Michael K. Short, 81, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, March 7, 2022. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday, March 11, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. Burial at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein.
Survivors include his wife, Connie; daughter, Cindy (Derek) Brown; grandchildren, Sarah Poyer and Jon Brown; and siblings, Marlene Barnes, Craig Short and S. Amy Guhl.
Mike was born June 28, 1940, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Willis and Helen (King) Short. He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1958 and then attended the University of Northern Iowa and Minot State University. Mike proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. On April 25, 1965, he married Connie Stoddard.
He began his career as a chemist for Rath Foods before moving to Cedar Rapids to take a position in sanitation for Wilson Foods. Upon the closure of Wilson, he and several coworkers formed CeMar Janitorial, where he spent nearly 25 years until his retirement.
Mike loved golfing and hit the links about every day. He hit three holes-in-one at Ellis Golf Course! Even when he couldn't golf anymore, he still loved helping out on the course. Mike also enjoyed bowling at CRBC in his younger days, and was a 50-year member of the SPEBSQSA, including the Harmony Hawks Barbershop Chorus in Cedar Rapids. He will be remembered for his jokes and strong work ethic.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jess; and in-laws, Ray and Leola Stoddard.
Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.
