Michael "Mike" Scoville, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospice Unit in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. Father Mark Reasoner of St. Jude

Catholic Church will lead a short prayer service at 2 p.m. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, with military honors. A luncheon will follow at the St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Mike was born at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, on Dec. 29, 1926, to Harry and Marie (Norris) Scoville. Mike grew up at St. Mary's Orphanage in Dubuque until he was 13 years old. He then moved to Boys Town, Neb., where he graduated from high school in 1945.

Mike warmly remembered his early years growing up in the Catholic orphanage and later at Boys Town with its founder, Father Edward Flanagan. Mike personally knew Father Flanagan, who called Mike "Red" because of his bright Irish-red hair. While at Boys Town, Mike learned the printing trade and picked up the sport of boxing, which he later continued in the Navy.

After graduation, Mike traveled to all 48 continental states with a magazine sales crew and sold magazines door-to-door.

Mike then enrolled in the Navy where he served 20 years of active duty. He traveled extensively during his service, including California, Hawaii, Guam, the Marshall Islands, Japan, Korea, Paris, France and Washington, D.C. He served aboard the USNS General A.W. Brewster

during the Korean War and ended his service working in the Secretary of the Navy's office at the Pentagon. While serving in the Navy, Mike met his wife, Marilyn (Fisher) of Mason City. They were united in marriage on St. Patrick's Day 1957 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City, where the family remained members for many years.

While the couple served in the Navy, a son, Michael Raymond Jr. was born on Jan. 30, 1962, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, a suburb of Paris.

Mike retired from the Navy in 1967 and the family settled in Mason City. The couple had another son, Melvin Richard, who was born Nov. 12, 1971.

After retiring from the Navy, Mike went to work at The First National Bank in Mason City, retiring after 21 years of service.

After retirement he worked several years for the Mason City Parks Department on the baseball diamonds.

Mike's loving wife of 39 years, Marilyn, passed away May 7, 1996.

Mike moved to Cedar Rapids in 2002 to be closer to his sons and lived at Evergreen Estates Assisted Living. He was an active member of St. Jude Catholic Church since moving to Cedar Rapids.

Mike was a member of Boys Town National Alumni Association, VFW, American Legion and the Lions Club.

Mike has always been known for his hard work ethic, devotion to church and family and volunteer efforts running a bowling league in Mason City for people with disabilities for 25 years.

Mike was an avid sports fan, enjoyed going to baseball games and loved spending time with his special dog friend, a Jack Russell Terrier, Penney.

Mike will be sadly missed by his loving family, including his son, Mike Jr. of Marion; his son, Melvin and his wife, Nicky, of Cedar Rapids; and his granddaughter, Allison.

He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Dr. Darrell Fisher and his wife, Susan, of Mason City; sister-in-law, Jeanette Kloberdanz of Port Charlotte, Fla.; many nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; a baby son in Paris, France; his mother and father; his sister, Marie (Fredericksen); his brother, Merle; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ervin and Ruth Fisher; his brother-in-law, William Kloberdanz; and a baby granddaughter, Melanie Ruth.
