Michael P. Scheetz, 52, passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Neb., following a courageous battle with cancer.

Before his illness he lived in Lincoln, Neb. Born to Paul Scheetz and Betty Brant in Iowa City, Iowa, on July 26, 1963, he was one of six children. Mike married his partner, Joe Reuter, in 2007; they were together for a total of 10 years, and lovingly helped raise one son.

Michael worked for over 30 years as an executive in the insurance industry, including 25 years at Principal Financial and Colonial Life, and ended in Lincoln, Neb., with Ameritas. Though he only worked with the amazing people at Ameritas for a short time, he truly felt like a part of the family there.

Michael graduated from Luther College in 1985 and then moved to Des Moines. He always was active in the community, charitable events and played volleyball for many years with the UBI Clan! Michael has always shown compassion, listened, and took the lead when needed. His mission always was to better himself in order to help lift others. He had the kindest of souls, most endearing smile and a vibrant light in his eyes.

Everyone who ever crossed his path always was left with a warm and caring impression. His legacy will forever go on.

Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Scheetz Morris, and sister, Donna Heisdorffer.

He is survived by his husband, Joe Reuter; son, Ysauro Renteria-Reuter; father, Paul and Lynnette Scheetz; stepfather, Kim Morris; sister, Debbie Bream; sister, Dede and Dave Ollendick; brother, Patrick and Julie Scheetz; sister, Jenna and Chad Houge; plus many loving nephews and nieces.

Celebration of Michael's Life: Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 5 to 9 p.m. at South Slope Community Center, 980 N. Front St., North Liberty, Iowa.
