Michael James O'Brien,
66, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017, at home surrounded by those who loved him. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Ressler. Burial: 1:30 p.m. Calvary Cemetery, Ryan. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home.
Mike is survived by his wife, Kathy; two sons, Scott (Amy) O'Brien of Shawnee, Kan., and TJ (Jennifer) O'Brien of Marion; three grandchildren, Casey Mae and Gabe O'Brien and Triston Woodside; three brothers, Dan (Kathy) O'Brien of Seneca, Kan., Shawn (Teresa) O'Brien and Dennis (Sheryl) O'Brien, both of Springville; and a sister, Mary (Bob) Petersmith of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Theresa Chapel; and a brother, Kevin O'Brien.
Mike was born June 11, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Dorrance and Dorothy Gaffney O'Brien. Mike graduated in 1970 from Washington High School and was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad for several years as a mechanic. He married Katherine Zalesky on Oct. 7, 1972. Mike was an auto mechanic and had retired as service manager from Wright Way Trailers.
Mike was a jack-of-all trades and master of many, whether it be answering a question about cars, leading a service crew or finalizing a sale. Mike was able to do it. Mike enjoyed softball, hunting, fishing and arrowhead hunting. Mike loved his family, was proud of his Irish heritage and loved to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
