Michael "Mike" Lee Combs, 53, of Marion, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, at Marion First United Methodist Church located at 5050 Rec Dr., Marion. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Morgan. Burial will be at Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion.
Mike was born May 4, 1965, in Riverside, Calif., the son of Gaylan and Farylan "Penny" (White) Combs. He graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1983 and went on to obtain a bachelor's degree in industrial technology in 1987 from Northwest Missouri State University. On July 22, 1989, in Mount Ayr, Mike was united in marriage to Beth Anne Still. They lived in Colorado Springs until 1992, when they moved to Cedar Rapids and he was employed by Central Iowa Power Corp. as an electrical draftsman. In 2000, he switched career paths and began at Welter Storage & Equipment providing office design and sales support.
Mike was a member of Marion First United Methodist Church. He was an active volunteer of the Marion High School athletics, much of his time spent with football, track and girls' basketball. Mike was a lifelong youth coach, coaching for Youth Park and Recreation in Mount Ayr during his college summers and coaching his children's sports until they reached high school. His passions were woodworking, his Corvette, making popcorn, eating chocolate chip cookies, drinking Mountain Dew, cheering on the Hawkeyes and Indians, and a yearly family trip to Myrtle Beach. One of his greatest joys was being a grandpa; he beamed whenever he was with his granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife, Beth Combs of Marion; son, Dalton (Rachel) Combs of Marion; daughter, Micaela Combs (Drake Tucker) of Marion; brother, Rich (Angie) Combs of Runnells; granddaughter, Rylynn Combs; brother-in-law, Brad (Christy) Still in Kellerton; stepmother-in-law, Jan Still of Mount Ayr; stepfather-in-law, LeRoy Wilmes of Maryville, Mo.; four nephews; one niece; his beloved dog, Holly; and many extended family and friends.
