Michael H. “Mike” Verry
Tiffin
Michael H. “Mike” Verry, 64, of Tiffin joined his Lord on Friday, June 16, 2023.
Michael Howard Verry was born May 24, 1959, in Iowa City, the son of William “Bill” and Rita (Kasper) Verry. Mike graduated with the Clear Creek Class of 1978 in Tiffin.
Mike worked at the former Carousel Restaurant in Coralville during high school and for many years after. He was a proud member of the Tiffin Fire Department, often volunteering at their pancake suppers. He enjoyed helping the neighbors of Tiffin by mowing their lawns, shoveling their sidewalks, and doing odd jobs for anyone who needed his help. He joined the Iowa National Guard, receiving an honorable discharge. Later in life he worked at Goodwill Industries and most recently the Coralville Food Pantry, always giving back to others. Mike liked to keep it simple, he enjoyed fishing, fishing, and more fishing; playing bingo, cards, attending parades and especially going to the stock car races where he enjoyed getting autographs from the local drivers. Mike was a true Hawkeyes fan, loved following his Hawkeyes on the radio and TV, even attending a few events when he could. Mike liked making beaded necklaces which of course he gave away to family, friends and even strangers; but really, Mike never met a stranger. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville, where his church family was very important to him. They treated him with compassion and even an extra donut once in a while. He cherished the title of Godfather to one of his nieces. Mike loved all holidays, he especially enjoyed sending cards to his family and friends; he always remembered your birthday. Mike continued his gift of giving by becoming an organ donor to several recipients, saving many lives.
Mike was a beloved Son, Brother, Uncle, Cousin and Friend who will be dearly missed by all.
His family includes siblings, Steve Verry, Sandy Bryant (Randy), Linda Walls, Jim Verry (Lynn), and Holly Cabuay (Barry); nieces and nephews, Quintin (Megan) Ben and Colin Bryant, Brittany (Maeson), Alissa, Tyler Walls, Tara (Brian and Weston) Steffensmeier, Josh (Laurynn), Jacob, Joseph, Anna Verry, Estella, Maddie, Gavin and Lachlan Cabuay; aunt, Dolores Vorel; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Rita Kasper Verry; grandparents, Howard and Ann McComas Verry, Ambrose and Leona Hebl Kasper Rogers, Aunts and Uncles: Leonard Vorel, Fran (Benry) Wenman, MaryAnn (Richard) Verscha, Bill Rogers, Dorothy Ann, Tom (Dorothy) and Betsy Verry; cousins also preceded him in death.
A time of visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 22, 2023, with funeral services following at 6 p.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville. Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tiffin. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in his memory to place a bench at one of his favorite fishing spots at Kent Park. Memorials may be sent in c/o Mike Verry P.O. Box 24, Tiffin, IA 52340.
