Meyer, Allene B.
Allene B. Meyer, 70, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, August 1, 2010, in Santa Fe, N.M.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary O. Ireland; and father, William K. Burtis.
Allene was born July 6, 1940. She married Robert J. Meyer on Dec. 27, 1979, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She received her B.A. from the University of Illinois. Allene was an economist for Hyde Park Coop in Chicago. She was in advertising for Wilson Meats and Quaker Oats Corporation in Chicago, and in Merchandising for Amana Corporation in Iowa, and for Santa Fe Jewelers Supply Inc.
Allene gave of her time visiting shut ins and as a lecturer and greeter with her church. She was an advocate for women's rights, was a member of NAACP, League of Women Voters, Archeological Society, Council of International Relations, CASAS and the Rape Crisis Center. Allene was an active quilter, where her work was exhibited at the Capitol Building in Santa Fe among other venues. She was passionate about gardening and politics and was a strong supporter of President Obama.
She is survived by her husband, Robert. J. Meyer; two sisters, Jane McInnes and Ginger Reno; nephew, Bradley B. Reno; and Robert Meyer's children, Anne Meyer and Paul Ruppel, Robert Meyer, Jennifer Meyer Lawrence, and Tom Meyer; and five grandchildren.
Lee enjoyed her life in Santa Fe. She was an engaged, vital person, pursuing her interests in fabric art, journaling, reading and taking a variety of Renesan and Community College classes. Her kindness and generosity of spirit were well known. She visited the sick and homebound in her church often bringing them home-cooked meals. Her untimely death is a loss to the whole community and her memory will be treasured in the hearts of her many friends who loved her.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 7, 2010, at St. Bede's Episcopal Church.
