Merrifield, Michael 'Mike' Dennis

Michael “Mike” Dennis Merrifield, 66, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Jude Catholic Church, by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: Czech National Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Friends may also visit after 9:30 a.m. at the church.

Mike is survived by his wife, Bonnie; children, Michelle (Phil) Svoboda of Atkins and David (Melissa) Merrifield of Cedar Rapids; and grandchildren, Mackenzie and Rylee Merrifield of Cedar Rapids.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Sonnie.

Mike was born Jan. 12, 1945, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Russell and Eleanor (Gorman) Merrifield. He married Bonnie L. Yanecek on Oct. 19, 1968, in Cedar Rapids. Mike specialized in marketing and advertising specialties in the Cedar Rapids area.

Mike enjoyed watching Notre Dame and Iowa football and coin and matchbook collecting. In past years he was a scoutmaster for Truman and Taft schools. He participated in the St. Jude Sweet Corn Festival for years. Mike loved grilling out and spending time with his grandchildren. Mike always went out of his way to offer a smile or to lend an opportunity for a smile or a good deal.
