Mena Michaelena DeSantis, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at Northbrook Manor Care, Cedar Rapids. Funeral services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until service time. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Mena is survived by nephews, Gerald Gasko of Chicago and Tom (Eileen) Wright of Tinley Park, Ill.; a niece, Linda (Todd) Ginther of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Dolores (James) Wright of Marion; and many great-nephews, great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan DeSantis; parents, Frank and Michaelena (Urevich) Degymas; sister, Lou Gasko; brother, Dan Degymas; niece, Micki Nowicki; and nephew, Albert Jr. Gasko.
Mena was born July 2, 1922, in Chicago, daughter of Frank and Michaelena (Urevich) Degymas. On July 7, 1963, Mena married Donato "Dan" DeSantis in Chicago. The couple moved to Cedar Rapids in 1974. She worked for FMC Corporation as an accountant for nearly 40 years.
Mena enjoyed golfing and bowling and was inducted into the Illinois Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame. She volunteered at Mercy Medical Center as a Prime Timer, making wooden tokens for patients and she knitted hats and booties for the newborns.
The family would like to give a special thank-you to the nurses and staff at Northbrook Manor Care Center for their wonderful care of Mena.
